Tofo Scuba

Praia do Tofo, Inhambane Province, Mozambique
(originally posted by myself under the nick "Bushshrike" on Tripadvisor - 18 Aug 2013)

I've been here now for two and a half months on my divemaster internship and been loving every moment of it.
Arriving here I expected hard work not realising that it would always be in a pleasant atmosphere; not to mention the educational value of every aspect. A lot of diving in the roll of sweeper (2nd staff member per dive bringing up the rear) obviously is part of the training. Even though this role can be very hard work at times, this is where I got so much experience of dealing with the problems divers have both at the surface and at depth.
In this regard, all the instructors (Dinis, Willem & Lucas) and John & Nikki (owners) were always ready to debrief/discuss the dives and share their insight and experience. I also noticed that this is a common practice between staff on a continuous basis which I think helps to maintain the high quality and safety standards.
My learning process has been steep, rapid and superbly rewarding. Over and above being close to qualifying as divemaster, thanks to everyone here, I will also be a much more experienced and better diver with the wider experience of being involved in the day to day running of a dive shop.
Kudos to Tofo Scuba that since I'd done my 1st Open Water dive with them in 2002, standards (equipment included) had not dropped even slightly when I returned now 11yrs later. The great team and atmosphere being an integral part of it all.
I cannot recommend them highly enough whether you want to do a course or just some good diving - this is where it's at!

Hitchhikers Lima Hostel

Miraflores, Lima, Peru
(reviewed by me on 13 June 2014 on TripAdvisor)

I've done my fair share of backpackers and this one is just a pleasure being at. Always clean, or being cleaned, it's very unlikely that you'll even go into a bathroom where there's water lying around - unless of course you go in directly after somebody.
Within walking distance from a variety of restaurants, shops, bars and clubs plus then just a stroll and you're at the clifftop of the magnificent views over the shorefront.
The wifi at the hostel is free and available pretty much everywhere in the hostel - very decent speed; enough obviously for people who like to Skype. Seen heaps of people skyping friends and family.
Will I return to this hostel? You bet I will!

Arica Unit Hostel

Arica, Chile
(reviewed by me on 30 September 2015 on Booking.com)

Arriving there was such a breath of fresh air of friendliness and offering help and advice of whatever you asked. The homely atmosphere really contributes to it being an excellent place for a few nights (or longer). Within walking distance from the terminal, beaches and town, so location is excellent as well. Breakfast is a light meal but much effort is put into it - and very very tasty.
Absolutely loved my stay here and if I pass by Arica another time - this is where I'll stay!
